PhysPAG Technology SAG Call, 10 March 2011

I. Status of Technology Assessments

(a) 2005 Technology Study comparison. (Steve Murray)

Circulated updated technology table from 2005 study covering multiple mission needs (comments requested). Steve plans to present the table as part of his NRC workshop talk on March 27.

(b) Near-term proposals (Kent Wood, Liz Hays, Colleen Wilson Hodges)

Focusing on gaps in the NRC road maps for technology not tied to specific missions; including buondary between hard X-rays and gamma rays. Following areas identified:

  • Technology for RXTE follow-on: solid state detectors, collimators for large arrays, continued development for polarimetry
  • If soft X-ray/EUV included (coordinate with COPAG): focal plane detectors, extend (normal incidence) multi-layer technologies
  • Gamma-ray related technologies presently not included in roadmaps and include:
    • overlap SS detectors tuned to higher frequecies, photon detectors/photo multipliers, lower power ASICS
    • focusing strategies such as baez-frenel defractor detectors, Laua long lens (need for extensible boom, formation flying)

(c) IXO and IXO-push technologies (Roger Brissenden)

Completed comparison for IXO and Gen-X high resoltuion (0.1") large effective area (~50 m^2) adjustable optics concept, and found technology is covered to a large degree in the roadmap draft.

Murray noted that Decadal had rated IXO TRL levels as lower so should use these values.

(d) LISA (Guido Mueller)

With support from Tuck Stebbins and Jeff Livas at GSFC, is assessing the following technology areas:

  • Graviational Reference Sensor
  • Drag Free
  • mNewton Thrusters
  • Lasers
  • Interferometer
  • Phasemeter
  • Wavefront Sensing
  • Ultra-stable structures
  • Telescope (straylight, backscatter)

A table mapped to the NRC web form is being developed for each and Gudio circulated an first cut example.

(e) Inflation Probe (no status today but Kent Irwin working)

(f) NRI (Steve Murray). Will check focal plane IR arrays, mosaicing. Coordinate with COPAG on WFIRST.

(g) Fundamental Physics. Kent Wood plans to cross check the roadmaps for precision clocks.

II. Workshops (Steve Murray)

Plans to present state of the art in photon detectors from CCDs to active pixel detectors, tied to missin opportunities. Will present the multi-mission technology matrix and will circulate a draft of the talk to the PhysPAG for comment.
